2014 SOFTBALL AWARDS AND STATS RECAP.....12/31/14

In a 2014 season that saw the GETdetroitsports.com sponsored softballers
move their base of operation from Dearborn to Sterling Heights, the rebuilding
year produced a series of changes.
The team began and ended the season scrambling to find enough players to
field a full team. However, in between the club won a spring season playoff title,
an eighth state media championship in the annual MESS tournament in Traverse
City and used a trio of ringers to reach the fall season playoff semi-finals.
The first half started with two mercy defeats and the regular season ended
with a 3-2 defeat in a first place tie-breaker contest. In between, our lads
chalked-up 10 straight victories.
The second half included a forfeit doubleheader win and a forfeit twinbill
loss, plus a walkoff defeat when our team was pulled off the field for the first
time ever. It also saw the first tie game since 1993 and 7th in all-time team
history dating back to 1979.
With Coach Kurt sidelined by illness for all of the fall regular season schedule,
son Erik Schneider took over as the longest serving interim skipper in team
history for 14 games.
The roster included five sets of brothers, a new team record.

A total of 33 players participated in the 35 games. Of the 12 players who
saw action in both the spring and fall Sterling HGTS seasons, only four had better
batting averages in the second half than the first. Only three of them had BAs
over the .500-mark in both halves.
Accordingly, the only two with significant playing times and .500-plus averages
in both halves were named co-MVPs. Erik Schneider & Harry Penczak shared the
honors. It's E's second consecutive MVP award and Hurler Harry's second in four
years.

Penczak was also named Stiff-of-the-Year for drawing two suspensions due to
ejections, one in the spring and another in the fall.

Of the six first year players who saw significant action, only Jake Page was a
full time starter in both halves and was designated "Rookie-of-the-Year."

Mike Duda was previously voted the "Mr. T" Award by his teammates for his
outstanding TC tournament in August.
