EIGHTH STATE TITLE FOR CK's SOFTBALLERS.....Sa-S, 8/9-10/2014

The GETdetroitsports.com/Detroit Press Club team rolled to a 4-0
sweep at the 32nd annual Michigan Editorial Softball Society (MESS)
tournament at the Traverse City Civic Center.
Coach Kurt's team featured three sets of brothers on the 13-man
squad and outscored the opposition 70-21.
It's the eighth MESS state media championship for CK's lads. In
24 MESS tournament appearances since 1988 (with time off for a three
year ban from 2004--2006) the team has eight titles and seven second
place finishes in 15 championship contests, plus one co-ed division
runner-up trophy in one try.
Mike and Jim Duda both hit .800 (12-for-15 each) in this tourney and
finished 1-2 in balloting by their teammates for the "Mr. T" Award (MESS
tournament team MVP). Younger brother Mike took the trophy with his
team-leading 11-RBIs including a pair of 3rHRs in the championship game.
Finishing third among the six who received the 14 votes was pitcher Harry
"Puddin'-Shot" Penczak, who allowed only 15-ER in 23-IP while striking-out
five enemies in the four games and not walking anybody.
This was the first outright "Mr. T" Award for Mike Duda, who was in a
3-way share for the honor in 2004 and shared the designation with "Ms. T"
in 2012 the one time a CK squad sent a co-ed entry to the MESS.
Here's the tournament recap.......

GAME ONE, Sat 8/9/14:

PRESS CLUB 23-31-0, 9-LOB...6-INN
Grand Rapids 9-17-2, 8-LOB

The Gds.com/DPC team opened tournament competition vs the host
team Grand Rapids Press and led all the way in a 23-9 decision that went
6-INN on both time limit and mercy rules.
Jim Duda hit for the cycle in his first four at-bats and added another
double to go 5-for-5 with 5-R & 7-RBI. Mike Duda had a pair of doubles in
a 5-for-5, 5-R effort. Erik Schneider, Steve O'Toole, Ed Kaltz and Paul
Schneider had 3-RBI each with The Hoss clubbing a 2rHR to spark the
6-R/T-6th clinching inning.
The team banged-out season-highs of 31 hits including a dozen extra
base hits.
The defense was flawless and turned a pair of double plays.

GAME TWO, Sat 8/9/14

Bay City 2-7-5, 8-LOB
PRESS CLUB 14-16-4, 8-LOB...5-INN (Mercy)

After a quiet start with neither team scoring in the opening inning, BC
tallied once in the T-2nd before our heroes went ahead to stay with a
5-R/B-2nd where Steve OToole and Paul Schneider both hit 2rHRs. Erik
Schneider later added a 3rHR. The game ended on Mike Duda's none out,
bases-loaded sac-fly for the mercy run in the B-5th.
Hurler Harry allowed just 1-ER and struck-out four BC Times hitters
(three on fouls and one on a swing-and-miss).
A 3-base error on a T-3rd deep flyball led to the defensive play of the
game when SStop OToole's strong relay to CA Paul Schneider cut the BC
runner down at the plate when that lead-off man foolishly tried to circle
the bases with his team trailing by 4-R.

GAME THREE, Sat 8/9/14

PRESS CLUB 18-20-2, 4-LOB.....5-INN (Mercy)
Muskegon 6-12-1, 6-LOB

The Press Clubbers completed a Saturday round-robin sweep with an
18-6 mercy-kill of the Muskegon Chronicle.
Trailing early, the Gds.com team went ahead to stay 5-4 on Mike Duda's
2-out/T-3rd RBI double. A 13-R/T-4th blew the ballgame open and was
capped by Bob Blair's 3rHR blast. Jim Duda also homered as he went 3-for-3.
Harry Penczak collected a trio of RBIs.
The defense turned two inning-ending double plays, one to choke-off a
3-R/B-1st and the other to end the game mercy-style in the B-5th.

CHAMPIONSHIP SUNDAY, 8/10/14

Grand Rapids 4-5-3, 3-LOB
PRESS CLUB 15-22-4, 12-LOB

In a rematch of the tournament opener the DPC defeated Grand Rapids
in the Sunday final 15-4, a run shy of a mercy-kill.
Feeling the sluggish effects of Boone's steakhouse, the Gds.com team
committed four errors to give the hosts a 4-0/Mid-2nd lead. Mike Duda's
3rHR highlighted an 8-R/B-2nd that put our lads in control. Mikey added
a second 3rHR, Steve O'Toole soloed and Ed Kaltz had a double with 3-RBIs.
A dozen of the 13 players had basehits, all excepting Tom Lockard who
instead walked twice and scored both times.
After the first two frames it was shutdown city as the defense and
Hurler Harry allowed only one single over the last 5-INN. Sixteen of the
last 17 GR batters were retired including the final 11 in a row.
