The Detroit Press Club lost the MESS (Michigan Editorial Softball Society)
tournament finals to the Detroit News for a third consecutive year at the
31st annual MESS the weekend of August 10th--11th, 2013.
This gives the 23 Coach Kurt coached teams seven runner-up trophies at
the MESS to go with seven championships and one co-ed second place finish.

TOURNAMENT RECAP...

Sa, 8/10, Gm-1:

    DPC                             24-22-2, 5-LOB...4-INN (Mercy)
    Grand Rapids Press     5-11-4, 8-LOB

    Playing with only nine men, a 14-R/T-1st keyed a 24-5, 4-INN mercy-kill
of the host Grand Rapids Press. Steve O'Toole and Pat Zajch hit homeruns in
the 1st inning outburst. Erik Schneider went 3-for-4 with 3-R & 5-RBI. Bob
Blair, O'Toole & Zajch had 3-RBI each. Harry Penczak threw the complete game
win and went 4-for-4 with 3-R & 2-RBI.

DPC                             21-27-7, 11-LOB
Muskegon Cronicle     13-19-6, 8-LOB

The Clubbers prevailed in a sloppy defensive game for both sides. "Rent-
A-Player" Ed Burger from the defunct Flint Journal team was the hitting hero,
going 4-for-5 with 2-R & 6-RBI and falling a homer shy of the cycle. Erik
Schneider went 4-for-5 with a double, 2-R & 3-RBI while Jimmy Walker was
4-for-6 with a two-bagger, 3-R & 1-RBI. The defense made seven errors but
also turned three double plays.

Bay City Times     19-21-1, 6-LOB...5-INN (Time Limit)
DPC                        9-12-8, 5-LOB

A 3-run homer by Pat Zajch was negated by an illegal bat determination,
one of several controversial calls in this contest. The dinger would have given
the Press Club a 9-7/B-3rd lead. Instead, the momentum-killing call ended that
frame with BC still out front 7-6. With the help of four DPC errors the Times then
scored 11 times in the T-4th to take a commanding lead in a contest halted after
5-INN by time limit. Erik Schneider and Brandon Proffer were both 2-for-3 with
1-R and Schneider had 3-RBI.

The defending champion Newsies took a 9-0/T-1st lead and never looked back,
pounding out 27-H in just 4-INN of at-bats. Steve O'Toole went 3-for-3 with 2-R &
4-RBI including a 3rHR. Brandon Proffer went 3-for-3. Paul Schneider hit a 2rHR.
In a rarity, neither team committed an error.

Bay City Times     5-8-1, 5-LOB
DPC                       17-18-2, 5-LOB...5-INN (Mercy)

Avenging a loss the day before, the Clubbers mercied Bay City 17-5 when Steve
O'Toole applied the death blow with a 2rHR to cap a 6-R/B-5th walkoff mercy-kill.
O'Toole was 4-for-4 with 3-R, a double, 2-HR & 6-RBI. Paul Schneider was 3-for-3
with 3-R, 2-HR & 5-RBI. Arriving in Traverse City Saturday night to bolster the
lineup on C-Ship Sunday, Joel Crawford was 3-for-4 with a double, 2-R & 1-RBI.

S, 8/11, Finals:

DPC                     0-5-1, 4-LOB
Detroit News     15-19-0, 6-LOB...4-INN (Mercy)

The News left no doubt which was the best team in the tournament with a 15-0
skunking of the Press Club in the title game. The final indignity came when a bases-
loaded walk forced home the mercy-kill run. Five different DPC players had basehits,
all singles, but none of the runners reached 3Base.

***     In a quick poll taken after the tournament, Paul Schneider was named the "Mr. T"
Award winner for tourney MVP. After not playing for five years, Hoss had a perfect
4-for-4 championship Sunday with two timely homers that turned the Bay City semi-final
into a rout. His B-2nd, 2rHR put the Clubbers ahead to stay 5-4 and his B-3rd, 3rHR
made it an 11-4 score. For the weekend the elder Schneider brother was 9-for-19
(.474-BA) with a double, 3-HR, 11-R & 10-RBI. It's the second Mr. T for Paul, his first
coming in 1997.
