    The 30th annual MESS (Michigan Editorial Softball Society) included participation
by a Coach Kurt team for the 22nd time. In addition to the usual men's team in the
"Open" division, the CK squad fielded a Co-Ed team for the first time.
    The result was a pair of runner-up finishes. CK's Detroit Press Club team lost
both the Co-Ed and Open championship games to the Detroit News. Overall the DPC
went 6-4 on the weekend, also losing a pair of Co-Ed and Open Saturday qualifying
games to the News.


Detroit News     18-24-1, 11-LOB
DPC                  7-9-7, 3-LOB.....6-INN, T-Limit
    A shoddy DPC defensive effort combined with two dozen News basehits
spelled doom in the tournament opener.    
    Mike Duda and Mike Shimo were both 2-for-2 with Shimo getting 2-RBI
and Duda 1-RBI. Kim Light was 1-for-3 as the only DPC lady with a safety.

    Our lads pulled out a B-7th walkoff win when Mike Duda led-off the
final frame with a double, Bob Blair was intentionally walked and Harry
Penczak delivered a game-winning single.There were three lead changes
and two ties in the contest.
    Duda was 3-for-4 with 3-R and a pair of doubles while Blair went
3-for-3with a walk, double, run and RBI.

Detroit News     20-21-1, 5-LOB.....6-INN, Mercy
DPC                  8-14-3, 6-LOB
    It was bad news vs the News for a second time Saturday morning when
the Newsies scored a mercy-kill. The DPC led 4-1 and 5-4 after two & three
innings before the News scored 16 times in their final three frames.
    Four Clubbers went 2-for-3 including Shimo and Gary Lesnau, who had
2-RBI each.

    The kill switch was flipped in the opposite direction when the DPC
dispatched BC in the minimum four frames on a 2-hit complete game
gem by Harry Penczak.
    Penczak, Erik Schneider and Brandon Proffer were all 3-for-3
with 3-RBI while Mike Duda went 1-for-1 with 4-RBI (including two

    With the hammer as time limit approached, A-Arbor went quietly
in the B-6th, their only scoreless inning of the close contest.
    Mike Duda went 5-for-5 with a double, two homeruns and 7-RBI.
Mike Shimo and Pat Scott were both 3-for-4 with 4-R, Shimo getting
3-RBI and Scott 2-RBI. Kim Light went 3-for-5 with a double, 3-R &

    The Clubbers took a 4-0/B1st lead and expanded from there.
    Mike Duda went 4-for-4 with two homers, 3-R & 4-RBI. Mike Shimo
was 3-for-3 with a HR, 2-R and 2-RBI. Joe Salisbury went 1-for-2 with
a solo homer. Kim Light was 2-for-4 with a triple, homerun, 4-R & 2-RBI.


DPC                       22-23-8, 9-LOB.....8-INN
Ann Arbor News     20-19-7, 14-LOB
    The Press Club prevailed in the first extra inning of the error-filled affair.
The tourney rules loaded the bases to start the 8th frame and the DPC went on to
score 7-R and then held AA to 5-R.    
    Mike Shimo was 6-for-6 with an inside-the-park homer, 5-R & 4-RBI. Mike Duda
hit for the cycle by going 4-for-5 with 3-R & 6-RBI. Tracy Lesnau was 2-for-5 with
2-R & 2-RBI. Joe Salisbury had a 3-run triple in the 7-R/T-8th.

Detroit News     21-24-3, 7-LOB.....5-INN, Mercy
DPC                  11-17-3, 8-LOB
    Allowed to use women ringer substitutes from Grand Rapids (approved by the
tournament dictator) the News pounded out an easy win by scoring 7-R in each of
the first three innings.
    Three DPC men had 2-H each including Erik Schneider who was 2-for-2 with a
double, 2-R & 2-RBI. Kim Light was 3-for-4 with 2-R. Tracy Lesnau went 2-for-3
with an RBI triple. Jennifer Salsbury had a perfect 2-for-2 plus a walk.

Grand Rapids Press     12-16-1, 7-LOB
DPC                            15-24-4, 8-LOB
    The Clubbers took a 7-1/B-1st lead, then briefly trailed 12-11 after a 6-R/T-6th
by GR. After the DPC scored four times in the B-6th, hurler Harry Penczak retired
the enemy 1-2-3 in the T-7th for the complete game victory.
    Erik Schneider & Mike Duda were both 4-for-4 with 4-R. EMS had 1-RBI and Duda
5-RBI with a triple and homer. Mike Shimo was 3-for-4 with 2-R. Penczak was a perfect
3-for-3 with 3-RBI. Bob Blair was among three Clubbers who went 2-for-3 and Bobcat
added a walk, 2-R & 2-RBI.

DPC                  19-25-0, 10-LOB
Detroit News     28-34-3, 11-LOB
    The DPC defense turned in its only errorless effort of the tournament, but the hot
hitting News had its biggest offensive output of the tourney and the News beat the Press
Club in the championship game for a second straight year.
    Mike Duda was a perfect 5-for-5 with a Grand Slam, 3-R & 8-RBI. Erik Schneider
went 2-for-4 with a double, 2-R & 4-RBI. The 3-4 hitters (Erik & Duda) drove home a
dozen of the DPC's 19 runs and accounted for all but five of the 17-RBIs. Ed Kaltz
went 4-for-4 with 1-R & 1-RBI.
