MESSED UP.....Sa 8/14/10

A general lack of hitting, especially in clutch situations, caused the Detroit
Press Club team an early elimination from the annual MESS (Michigan Editorial
Softball Society) tournament at the Traverse City Civic Center.
The DPC went 1-&-2 in the Saturday round games, losing their first and last
contests. The Clubbers had won the tourney three straight years (2007--09),
but when the DPC trailed the Grand Rapids Press (the only team in the 2010
tournament they did not face) by five in the runs/tiebreaker, it marked the first
time since 1990 a Coach Kurt club did not reach the MESS Semi-Finals (excluding
2005--06 when the team did not participate).
The DPC had its chances, but stranded an average of 11 men on base in the
trio of games and managed only three total extra base hits, all in the Gm-1 loss.
Already understaffed, the injuries began mounting in batting practice and three
starters who got hurt on Saturday joined the list of three players already limping
when the tournament began.

Gm-1:

DPC                    4-11-6, 8-LOB
Flint Journal     16-19-0, 5-LOB.....6-INN (Mercy)

After taking a 4-0/T-1st lead, the DPC did not score again and a half dozen errors
helped Flint to their B-6th walkoff mercy-kill with five of the 16-R unearned.

DPC...
Evanoff (lcf)                    0-for-3
Zajch (ah)                       2-for-3, 1-2B, 1-3B, 1-R

Gm-2:

DPC                       9-15-1, 14-LOB
Bay City Times     2-6-1, 4-LOB

Although our lads left the bases loaded three different times, the Clubbers advanced by
limiting the BC Boys to just 1-R on a half dozen hits to earn the DPC's lone win of the 2010
tourney.

DPC...
Evanoff (lcf)                 3-for-4, 1-R, 2-RBI
Zajch (ah-c)                 1-for-3, 1-W, 1-R, 1-RBI
E Schneider (c-1b)       1-for-4

Gm-3:

Muskegon Chronicle     8-15-0, 6-LOB
DPC                               4-14-2, 13-LOB

Needing a win for certain advancement, the DPC was retired in order in the B-1st and
then stranded at least two men on base in each of the last six frames to waste too many
chances. The Muskegon defense, particularly the left side of the infield, pulled off more
than a half dozen rally-killing plays.
