    The detroitsports-mcw.com sponsored
Detroit Press Club team made it back-to-back
championships at the 26th annual Michigan
Editorial Society state tournament in Traverse
City, MICH the weekend of August 9th--10th.
This gives Coach Kurt-led clubs a total of
six state media titles.
The DPC was upset by the Detroit NEWS on a
poor time limit ruling by the the umpire in game one of Saturday's position round.
However, our favorites came back to max-out the margin-of-victory runs production
in each of the other four contests and gained sweet revenge on the NEWS by skunking
our fellow Detroiters 19-0 in Sunday's "Open Division" tournament Final.

Sat 8/9/08.....Game One.....DPC                     18-25-3, 8-LOB
Detroit NEWS     19-23-3, 8-LOB.....6-INN Time Limit
This back-&-forth battle saw seven lead changes and two ties, the NEWS earning
the win in the B-6th with 2-out on an RBI-1B by the clean-up hitter. This came only after
the ump incorrectly informed of the pending time limit in the bottom of the inning, rather
than the top of the frame.
Ryan Kaltz went 4-for-4 with 3-R, a triple, 2-HR & 6-RBI. Three other DPC batters
(Joel Crawford, Paul Mikula & Harry Penczak) were 3-for-4. Gary Marty went 2-for-4
with 2-R, a 2rHR & 4-RBI.

Sat 8/9/08.....Game Two.....DPC                                  25-28-3, 7-LOB
                                                Bay City TIMES, Tm-2     11-21-3, 12-LOB
Although not a mercy-killing because the DPC didn't extend its margin to plus-12 until
the T-7th, this game did max-out the 12-R difference (for Sunday seedings) allowed in MESS
rules.
Paul Mikula pounded the ball in a 4-for-5, 4-R performance with a pair of doubles, two
homers and 6-RBI. Joel Crawford and Ryan Kaltz were both 3-for-4 with Kaltz hitting
another homerun and collecting 5-RBI. Gary Marty's lone hit was a 2rHR. Winning pitcher
Walt Mikula threw a complate game and went 4-for-5 with 3-RBI.

Sat 8/9/08.....Game Three.....Flint Journal     12-14-1, 6-LOB
                                                  DPC                   24-28-1, 5-LOB.....5-INN Mercy
Winning the toss and playing as "home" team for the first time, the DPC pushed
across 4-R in an abbreviated B-5th for a walkoff mercy-killing. Greg Polisano's RBI-1B
brought in the mercy-kill run.
    Paul Mikula was 4-for-4 with 4-R, 2-HR & 6-RBI. Ryan Kaltz went 3-for-4 with 4-R,
getting a double, triple and solo homerun to fall a single shy of the cycle. Nick Evanoff,
Erik Schneider and Gary Marty were all also 3-for-4 and Mike Gierucke went 3-for-3.
Joel Crawford was 2-for-4 with 3-R and a solo homer. Capt. Mike McBride hit an inside-
the-park 3rHR.

Sun 8/10/08.....Semi-Finals.....Grand Rapids PRESS, Tm-2     10-13-4, 6-LOB
                                                   DPC                                         27-29-3, 4-LOB.....4-INN Mercy
Trailing 5-0 before ever coming to bat, the Clubbers came right back with a 6-R/B-1st,
capped by Erik Schneider's 3rHR which reached the parking lot sidewalk. G-R scored a pair
to briefly go up 7-6/T-2nd, but a 12-spot in the B-2nd by the DPC paved the way for a
quickie mercy win halted after only three and a half innings.
Gary Marty was 3-for-3 with 2-R, a Grand Slam & 6-RBI. Schneider was also 3-for-3 with
his dinger, 3-R and 5-RBI. Ryan Kaltz went 4-for-4 with 3-R, a double and 3-RBI. Mike Gierucke
had his second straight 3-for-3 effort. Winning pitcher Harry Penczak was 3-for-3 with 3-R.

Sun 8/10/08.....MESS "Open" Finals.....DPC                     19-26-1, 6-LOB.....4-INN Mercy
                                                                Detroit NEWS      0-5-1, 6-LOB
The Newsies never had a chance in this rematch of Saturday morning's first contest.
The Clubbers scored five times in the T-1st, posted a 10-R/T-2nd, then added 3-R in the T-3rd
and one more in the T-4th. Meantime, Harry Penczak pitched a gem, allowing only 5-H with
no walks in throwing what's believed to be the only mercy-kill shutout in the 26 year history
of the MESS tourney Final.
Erik Schneider was 2-for-3 with a R, triple, 2rHR and 4-RBI. Ryan Kaltz went 3-for-4 with
3-R, a triple, homerun and 3-RBI. Paul Mikula was 3-for-3 with 2-R, a homer and 3-RBI. Lead-
off man Nick Evanoff went 4-for-4 with 3-R and 3-RBI including an inside-the-park solo homer.
All but two of the eleven DPC starters collected multiple basehits.

MORE TOURNEY NOTES:     Hampered by leg injuries, Jeff Crawford and Joe Salisbury still
contributed key hits with Jeff C going 2-for-3 with 2-R & 2-RBI in his only full game and
Joe beating out an INF single with a textbook slide to the double-bag. Both Jeff C and
Joe S collected 1-RBI per basehit. Bench coach Ed Kaltz made the most of his PT by going
3-for-3 as a pinch-hitter and 5-for-6 in the tourney with, naturally, a trademark sac-fly.
The Clubbers averaged an amazing 6.57 runs-per-inning on Championship Sunday while
hitting .733 (55-for-75) in the Semis & Finals.
Ryan Kaltz led with 7-H & 6-R and Erik Schneider with 9-RBI in the Sunday Dheader.

Mon 08/11-08.....DPC          5-10-0, -LOB
                             3 Nicks     12-16-2, -LOB
The Detroit Press Club concluded regular season play at Dearborn-Rotunda Mon, 8/11/08.
Minus four regulars and with a flat offensive effort the day after the MESS tourney, the DPC
lost a position round game to the 3 Nick's club by a 12-5 score. The decision gives 3 Nick's
the championship with the DPC now tied for second place pending a tiebreaker playoff vs
Buffalo Wild Wings.
In Monday's contest Mike McBride was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Joe Salisbury & Harry
Penczak both went 2-for-3. Salisbury batted in two runs.

Tue 8/12/08.....COBRA KAI       18-21-2, 8-LOB
                           Boatworks       19-15-4, 10-LOB.....6-INN, Time Limit

The detroitsports-mcw.com sponsored Cobra Kai club then made its second season debut
at Liberty Park in Sterling Hgts, MICH on Tuesday 8/12/08. With seven rookies in the line-up,
the C-Kais fell behind 8-1 after the 1st-INN, rallied to twice go on top, but lost in the bottom
of the 6th-INN time-limited contest 19-18.
Poor pitching contributed 14-W to the opposition. Timely hitting was missing too with
our heros leaving a man stranded on thirdbase in three of the six frames.
    Erik Schneider went 4-for-4 with 3-R, a triple & 3-RBI. Ed Kaltz went 2-for-3 with a R,
W and 3-run triple. Gary Marty was 3-for-4 with 3-R & 2-RBI. Mike Duda returned to the
team and was 2-for-4 with 3-R, a double & RBI and grabbed seven putouts in LField. Dave
Beardsley had a 3r2B.
