(#31) POSTED A SHUTOUT<<

@ LITTLE CAESARS ARENA:

    Philipp Grubauer made 39-SV
for his second shutout in five
games, third of the season and
sixth of his NHL career in a 1-0 Washington win over the Red Wings Thursday
night.

The decision was Detroit's 11th loss in 12 games (1-10-1) and eliminated
the Wings from playoff contention for a second consecutive spring after the
team's 25 year post-season run.

Washington broke a lengthy scoreless tie at 6:41/3 on a Detroit mistake.
Playing for the first time in 10 games, usual healthy scratch Xavier Ouellet
turned the puck over at the Capitals blueline to start a 2-on-none Caps
breakaway.  Jakub Vrana nudged the disc to Brett Connolly (#15), who shot
over Jimmy Howard's glovehand.

    Howard had 25-SV.

The Wings had a nice individual effort Andreas Athanasiou goal disallowed
with 9:13 left in the 1st-PER due to Todd Bertuzzi goaltender interference.

First in the NHL Metropolitan Division, the Caps won their second straight
and 6th-of-7.

OVERTIME:

Detroit DEF Mike Green is out for the rest of the season.  Green will have
cervical spine (neck) surgery April 5TH and will need at least two months to
recover.  Detroit's lone representative at this season's NHL All-Star game, the
32-year-old Green can become an unrestricted free agent July 1ST.
