SCORED HIS SECOND GOAL IN THE
@ LITTLE CAESARS ARENA:
The Red Wings returned to home
ice after playing 10-of-11 on the road
and ended the NHL's longest active
losing streak of 10 games by beating
Philadelphia 5-4 in a shootout.
Firing first, all-time NHL shootout goal leader Frans Nielsen 5-holed Flyers
relief netminder Alex Leon with the lone goal of the 3-round shootout for the
Detroit had let 3-1 and 4-3 leads slip away in the 3rd-PER.
Dylan Larkin ended a 17 game goal-less slump by scoring twice for Detroit
Traded from the Wings to Philadelphia at the NHL dealing deadline, goalie
Petr Mrazek had an unhappy homecoming when he was pulled from between
the pipes after yielding three goals in a span of 3:49.
That was part of a middle period flurry of four goals in less than 4-mins.
Larkin went on an end-to-end rush to open the scoring at 6:08/2.
Larkin (#10) skated up right wing to shoot from the right faceoff circle and
beat Mrazek on the far side for the 50th goal of his NHL career.
Another lengthwise rush made it 2-0 Detroit when Luke Glendening (#9)
scored shorthanded/unassisted at 7:59/2 on a middle right circle wrister that
beat Mrazek over his waving glove on the short side.
The Flyers got that goal back on the same power play at 8:53/2 when
Sean Couturier (#30) potted a rebound past a flopping Jimmy Howard.
The Wings went up 3-1 at 9:57/2 as Evgeny Svechnikov scored his first
NHL goal, converting a pass from fellow rookie Martin Frk during a scramble,
shooting from between mid-circles through traffic to an open right side of
the net. Mrazek was yanked after making 16-SV on 19-SOG.
Matt Read (#1) started the Philly comeback when he upward deflected
Scott Laughton's shot at 7:46/3.
Shayne Gostisbehere (#13) tied it 3-3 on the power play at 9:40/3 when
he wristed a Jakub Voracek cross-pass from the top of the right circle to beat
Howard on the short side.
Larkin (#11) briefly put Detroit back on top from the lower left circle at
14:06/3 by sending an Anthony Mantha end zone pass past Lyon.
Philly re-tied it 28-sec later when Travis Konecny (#20) knocked the puck
in. Originally ruled no-goal, the on-ice call was overruled when video confirmed
the disc crossed the line a moment before Konecny was checked and dislodged
Lyon robbed Detroit's Danny DeKeyser twice at point blank range in overtime,
including a stop with 0.9-sec left. Howard made a close-in leg save on Claude
Giroux in the OT.
Howard made 27-SV through 65-mins and was 3-for-3 in save-ops in the
shootout. Lyon had 11-SV in his 34:36 relief minutes.
Fighting to make the playoffs the Flyers lost for the eighth time in 11
games (3-6-2) as the Red Wings avoided mathematical elimination.
