FIRST TIGER HOMERUN TROT<<

@ TAMPA, FL:

    Jordan Zimmermann threw an
excellent five scoreless innings
and the Tigers played to their
third Grapefruit LGE tie in a 2-2
decision vs the New York Yankees
at Steinbrenner Stadium Tuesday
afternoon.

Zimmermann scatter two hits with no walks in his best outing this
spring.  Zimmermann needed only 60-pitches to set down a stacked
Yankee lineup with the help of a new two-seam sinking fastball.  After
the game Zimmermann said he felt better than he had in three years.

Detroit forced the 9-INN tie with a single run in the T-9th produced
by two OFielders perhaps battling for the same roster spot.  JaCoby Jones
led-off the frame with a single, advanced to second Giovanny Gallegos
wild pitch and scored on a Victor Reyes line drive single to CField where
Reyes took 2Base on the tardy throw toward the plate.

Jones went 3-for-3 plus a walk to jack his Grapefruit average to .462.
Jones was the only batter in the ballgame with multiple hits.

The Tigers had taken a 1-0/T-3rd lead when Leonys Martin solo homered
(#2) off Yankee starter C.C. Sabathia.  His first exhibition homerun was an
inside-the-parker.  Martin's second homer almost traveled outside the
ballpark, landing in the RCField cabana above the drained swamp.

Both New York runs came in the B-8th charged to third Tiger hurler Drew
VerHagen (6.75-ERA).  Didi Gregarious led-off with a homerun (#3) to RCField.
Aaron Hicks singled and Adam Lind walked to put two on with one out.  Non-
rostered Louis Coleman replaced VerHagen to load the bases and promptly
walked Gleyber Torres to load the bases.  Shane Robinson's fielder's choice
grounder brought Hicks home to give the Yankees a brief 2-1 lead.

New York's dynamic dinger duo of Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton
were both 0-for-3 at the plate with Judge striking-out twice and Stanton once.

With just one win in 11 games the Tigers are 7-10-3 in Grapefruit LGE
action.

EXTRA INNINGS:

In advance of Wednesday's off-day the Tigers made their first large
scale roster cuts of camp, reassigning 11 players:  LHP Ryan Carpenter,
CA Grayson Greiner and OF Mike Gerber were sent to 3A Toledo.  RHP
Sandy Baez and SS Sergio Alcantara were assigned to 2A Erie.  RHP
Eduardo Jimenez will be going to High-A Lakeland.  Sent to minor
league camp pending assignment were RHPs Enrique Bergos, Kevin
Comer & Mark Montgomery and CAs Arvicent Perez & Jake Rogers.

Rated as MLB's #5 top prospect but slowly recovering his form after
Tommy John surgery on his left/non-throwing elbow last June, Yankee
2Bman/3Bman Torres was optioned to 3A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after
Tuesday's game.  Torres singled and walked in two at-bats but was only
hitting .160 in exhibition action.
