    The Nationals scored four times
in the final two innings off pitchers
who won't be pitching for the Tigers
by Opening Day and Washington
defeated Detroit 5-4.

Enrique Burgos came on in the
T-8th and allowed a walk and a single.  When Burgos slipped and fell on the
mound tossing to his third hitter he came out with an injured groin.  Zac
Reininger (L, 0-1) entered and allowed both inherited runners plus one more
to score to put the Nats ahead 4-3.  Juan Soto had an RBI double.  Jose
Marmolejos scored on a passed ball charged to Grayson Greiner.  Soto came
in on a Chris Dominguez soft single.

In the T-9th Washington loaded the bases off former Mexican LGE lefty
James Russell and Soto forced in a run with a sacks clogged walk.

Early on Tiger pitching was good.

Needing an impressive start to stay in the mix to stay in the hunt for a
rotation spot, southpaw Matt Boyd threw three scoreless innings.  Boyd
gave up 1-H & 2-W with 3-K.

Lefty hopeful Ryan Carpenter worked the second 3-IP for Detroit.
He yielded 1-R/1-ER on 4-H with 2-K.  The Nats scored to tie the game
1-1/T-5th on a Wilmer Dilfo bases loaded infield single.

Detroit had taken an early 1-0 lead on a B-3rd Jeimer Candelario
bases loaded fielder's choice forceout at 2Base to plate JaCoby Jones
off Washington starter Edwin Jackson.

The Tigers made it 3-1 via a 2-out/B-6th 2-run rally.  Victor Martinez
bounced a ground rule double into the LCField berm.  Pinch-runner Alexi
Amarista trotted home on John Hicks' triple off the CGField wall.  Hicks
came home on a Enny Romero wild pitch.

After the Nationals had gone ahead, hot prospect Mike Gerber solo
homered (#1) to CField in the B-9th for the 5-4 final.

Fourth Nationals pitcher Matt Grace worked one scoreless inning to
get the win (1-0).  Although he served up Gerber's homerun, Bryan Harper
tossed the B-9th for the save (#1).

Detroit defensive highlights included CA Hicks throwing out two
Nats baserunners on a pick-off and a caught stealing and Carpenter picking-
off a runner at 1Base.

V-Mart was 2-for-3 (.281-BA) as the only batter in the ballgame with
multiple hits.

With only one win in their last 10 games Detroit fell to 7-10-2 in
Grapefruit contests.

      WAS       5-10-0, 12-LOB       (W) Grace, 1-0;  (S) B. Harper, #1
      DET        4-9-1, 7-LOB          (L) Reininger, 0-1

With Dad Kirk Gibson broadcasting on Tiger TV, Detroit farmhand Kam
Gibson got into the game late.  Young Gibby went 0-for-1 at the plate on
an infield pop-up and made a difficult catch in LField on a windblown
