ARLINGTON, TX:

The Tigers won their third straight game while Nate Robertson got his
first victory since last AUG 30th as the Tigers topped Texas 2-0 to open
a 3-game series in Arlington.
Robertson got his first W in a dozen starts going back to last year and
in his six this season. Robertson tossed 8-INN yielding just 6-H & 1-W
with 3-Ks. Robertson (1-2 with 3-NDs) has given up just 2-ER in his last
20.2-INN.
Texas starter Chris Young matched Robertson's 8-S'less-INN in the
most impressive of his 19 big league starts. Detroit finally broke the
deadlock against onetime Tiger Francisco Cordero (L, 0-1) in the T-9th.
The AL saves leader, Cordero got the first two Tigers he faced before
walking Dmitri Young on a controversial 3-2 pitch where an appeal of a
checked D-Y swing was denied. Craig Monroe then followed with a hit-&-
run 3B to RCField to score Young, ex-Ranger Monroe getting his 20th-RBI
of the year. Monroe then came home with an insurance marker on a
seeing-eye 1B through an INF hole into short RField by Carlos Pena.
After Jamie Walker gave up a lead-off Hank Blalock 1B to start the B-9th,
second Tiger reliever Ugueth Urbina came on for the save (#2). Although
Ugie walked a man, he got PHitter David Delucci on strikes to both end the
contest and Delucci's streak of reaching base safely in 19 games.
Urbina has resumed his former role as Detroit's closer because before the
game the Tigers announced they'd DLed Troy Percival with a partial tendon
tear in his right forearm. Percival will be sidelined 4-6 weeks. RHander Chris
Spurling has been recalled from 3A Toledo to take Percival's roster spot.
Detroit's top two hitters provided more than half the team's offense.
Nook Logan went 3-for-4 (his third 3-hit game this season) including a lead-
off 3B while Brandon Inge was 2-for-4 with a 2B.
In his second return to Texas former Ranger Pudge Rodriguez went
0-for-4 with 2-Ks.
It was the first Tiger SHO of the season and was the second time the
Rangers have been blanked.

    DET     2-8-0, 6-LOB
    TEX     0-7-0, 8-LOB
