THE BALL OVER THE GOALLINE FOR
DETROIT's FIRST TOUCHDOWN<<
@ ORCHARD PARK, NY:
The Lions led 14-0 in the 1st-Qtr,
21-0 early in the 2nd-Qtr and 35-3
at halftime on their way to a 35-13
win at Buffalo in the exhibition finale for both teams.
The Detroit defense produced three turnovers, giving "The D" seven takeaways
in two weeks. Two Lion interceptions led to a pair of Detroit touchdowns.
With Buffalo's top two QBacks out due to injury, out-of-work Matt Leinart
was signed as a free agent and Thaddeus Lewis was obtained from Detroit via
trade, both on Sunday. Neither had much success moving the Bills offense.
In the pre-season finale where starters rarely play, top Lion QBack Matthew
Stafford played just two series, was 1-of-6 for 12-yards in the air and was intercepted
once. Star WR Calvin Johnson did not dress and neither did defensive starters
Ndamukong Suh and Louis Delmas.
Detroit second string Q-B Shaun Hill threw 1st-Qtr TD passes to Patrick
Edwards (8-yds) and Kris Durham (6-yds). Third string Lion QBack Kellen Moore
tossed a pair of late 2nd-Qtr touchdowns of 8 & 4-yds, both to Theo Riddick.
In between the four Detroit TD tosses, Joique Bell followed a turnover with
a 23-yd touchdown run that put the Lions ahead 21-Zip just 2:59 into the 2nd-Qtr.
Hill was 4-for-5 for 69-yards and Moore 10-of-18 for 78-yards.
Prospect RBack Steven Miller led Detroit rushers with 72-yards on 12
carries. Reggie Bush DNP.
Dustin Hopkins booted field goals of 38 & 36-yds for Buffalo.
Lewis finally did get the Bills into the end zone midway through the 4th-Qtr on a
pass that Marcus Easley took down the right sideline to race for a 79-yd score.
Lewis was 7-of-16 passing for 132-yards and led Buffalo in rushing with 51-yards
in seven carries.
Leinart showed the rust of unemployment by going just 3-of-10 passing for 11-
yards and two INTs.
Bill Bentley and Rashean Mathias had the Detroit interceptions while Michael
Spurlock recovered a fumble on special teams. Willie Young had both Lion sacks.
Detroit concluded the pre-season 3-1. The Bills went 2-2.
LIONS H-COACH JIM SCHWARTZ: "Well, we’re still sloppy...I mean there is
stuff that we can do better."
LIONS CB BILL BENTLEY: "That’s our plan is to come out with three-plus turnovers
per game. We got that done tonight."
BILLS H-COACH DOUG MARRONE: "You have two quarterbacks that have been
here for about two days...[However], we should be playing much better than this.
And that's a concern."
Lions safety Don Carey did not return after appearing to suffer a shoulder
injury while making a tackle.
The Lions and all NFL teams must trim their rosters from 75 to 53 players by
6pm Saturday in preparation for the regular season.
