THE YEAR BY MARTINEZ<<

@ COMERICA PARK:

†  † The Tigers scored a half dozen
runs, all with 2-out/B-5th, to go
ahead and defeat the Oakland A's
Tuesday night 8-3 in the opener of
a brief 2-game Downtown Detroit series.
†  † The 51-45 Tigers re-tied the Indians for first place in the AL-Central
as Cleveland lost at Minnesota.
†  † Detroit snapped a scoreless tie on a 2-out fielding error by Oakland
1Bman Connor Jackson which permitted Victor Martinez (who'd 1-out
singled) to score all the way from 1Baseon an acrobatic reach-back slide
to the plate in the B-4th.
 †  †  †The A's forged ahead with a 3-R/T-5th off Tiger starter Rick Porcello.
Kurt Suzuki led-off the frame with a double to LField. Ryan Sweeney 2-out
singled to RField to plate Suzuki. Coco Crisp hit a two-bagger and Hideki
Matsui sent a 2r1B to RField to put the A's up 3-1.
†  † Detroit then took over in the B-5th with six 2-out runs as they chased former
Tiger farmhand Guillermo Moscoso (L, 3-5) from the hill. Back from his left wrist
injury that sidelined him more than a week, Austin Jackson 1-out singled, went
to third on a Brennan Boesch double and came home on a Magglio Ordonez sac-
fly for the frame's second out. Miguel Cabrera bombed a 422-foot, 2rHR (#20) over
the visitors bullpen in LCField to make it 4-3 Detroit. Victor Martinez doubled,
Jhonny Peralta singled V-Mart home and Carlos Guillen skied a 2rHR (#1) off the
top of the RCField fence for a video reviewed homer.  †  †  †  †
†  † Detroit added an insurance marker off first A's reliever Craig Breslow in the
B-6th on a 1-out Jackson single, followed by an RBI-2B to RField by Boesch to make
it an 8-3 final.
 †  † Porcello scattered 8-H with 0-W, 2-HBP and 3-K over 6-IP to get his third
consecutive victory (9-6). Phil Coke and Al Alburquerque finished upon the mound
for Detroit.  †  †  † †  †
 †  † Boesch went 3-for-5, Guillen was 2-for-3, Martinez 2-for-4 and Jackson 2-for-5
at the plate for Detroit.
†  † Cliff Pennington went 3-for-4 for the A's. David DeJesus was 2-for-3, Matsui 2-for-4
and Crisp 2-for-5.

 †  †  † OAK  †  †  † 3-11-1, 9-LOB  †  †  † (L) Moscoso, 3-5

QUOTEBOOK...  †  †  †  †  †  †  †

TIGERS MGR JIM LEYLAND:  † "[Guillen is] giving us a little punch, obviously.
Thatís nice to see. It fleshes out your lineup whenever you get another hitter
going in there, particularly a switch hitter like Carlos, and a proven hitter."

TIGERS SP RICK PORCELLO:  † "I think we're just using a better mix of [his]
off-speed stuff. I think that's keeping guys off balance."

TIGERS DH VICTOR MARTINEZ:  † "Sometimes, we need a little thing like [his
home plate touch] to get a team going...I think that's one of those things
where you don't practice that, obviously. I was dead out and just trying to
make something happen...I think when I went past home plate, [Suzuki] was
still with his glove laid on the plate, and I was like, 'Wait a minute, I think
I've got a chance to [sneak] my hand here."

TIGERS 1B MIGUEL CABRERA:  † "In that at-bat, [Moscoso] threw me a good
pitch to hit, I think 1-1, but I just missed it. I was kind of upset, but I said
to myself, 'Focus on this at-bat. Try to make something happen and try to
see a ball and do a better job [to hit his HR]...[Martinez has] got a salsa
move -- salsa, with meringue, with reggaeton, together [on his HP score]."

A's CA KURT SUZUKI:  † "[Martinez] stopped and did a little dance and avoided
me and that was that. He did a good job of avoiding the play."

EXTRA INNINGS:

†  † Hit by a pitched ball in the T-4th, ex-Tiger Scott Sizemore left the game in
the B-6th with a head injury. Sizemore went 0-for-1 with a K officially and is now
batting .247.  †
†  † Cabrera's homer was his 600th MLB career extra base hit.
†  † Guillen is 4-for-10 for a .400-BA in three games since coming off the DL (knee
surgery).
 †  † Now a target of CoPa boo-birds, Tiger 3Bman Brandon Inge was 0-for-4 with 1-K
to drop his BA to just .177.
†  † The Tigers signed two of their top picks in the June draft on Tuesday. Vanderbilt
1Bman Aaron Westlake (3-HR in the College World Series) the 3rd-Rd selection and
6th-Rd choice Tyler Collins of Howard College (.488-BA, National Junior College Player-
of-the-Year) came to terms. †  †  †  †  †
†  † After the game OF Casper Wells and LHP Adam Wilk were optioned back to 3A
Toledo and LHPs Duane Below and Charlie Furbush were recalled from the Mud Hens.
†  † Below (9-4 for the Hens) will make his MLB debut Wednesday night as Detroit's
starting pitcher. Oakland's probable is RHP Brandon McCarthy (2-5) for the series finale.
