@ COMERICA PARK:

 †  † Just back from 3A Toledo,
Scott Sizemore had basehits
his first three times at bat to
help the Tigers beat the New York Yankees 4-2 and end a season's-worst
seven game losing streak Tuesday night.
†  † Sizemore was handed the starting 2Base job last year and couldn't
hold onto it. Within a month he was demoted to Toledo to begin a yo-yo
series of demotions and call-ups that lasted until September. Sizemore
failed to regain the job in spring training this year.
†  † With the Mud Hens Sizemore posted a .408-BA for the first month of
this season and earned a return trip to Detroit. Tuesday Sizemore went
3-for-4, started the game-ending double play on defense and acted like he
wants no more time in Triple-A.
†  † Austin Jackson showed continuing signs of breaking out of his season-long
batting slump by going 2-for-5 (two extra base hits) and Magglio Ordonez
began to snap out of his by going 2-for-4.
†  † Detroit's top three hitters, Jackson, Sizemore & Ordonez, collected
seven of Detroit's 11 hits to key the 4-2 win.
†  † The Tigers scored all their runs off Yankee ace C.C. Sabathia. Detroit
instantly jumped on the big lefty in the B-1st. Jackson hit C.C.'s first pitch
to the LField corner for a ground rule double and Sizemore hit Sabathia's
third offering of the contest off the glove of NYY's Curtis Granderson in
RCField for another two-bagger. Jackson had retreated to 2Base for a
possible tag-up on Sizemore's shot, so he only reached third on the hit.
Ordonez then delivered an RBI-G'out to plate Jackson and move up Sizemore.
A Miguel Cabrera sac-fly followed to drive in Sizemore and make it 2-0.
†  † Sizemore's T-4th error set up an un earned run against Tiger starter Brad
Penny (W, 2-3) on a Russell Martin RBI-2B to LField.  †The Yanks failed to tie the
game in the same frame when Andruw Jones was thrown out at the plate as he
attempted to score on a flyball to RField. Casper Wells fired the ball home and
Alex Avila blocked the plate to apply the tag in an inning-ending double play.
†  † The Tigers got another pair of runs off Sabathia (L, 2-2) in the B-5th. Brandon
Inge drew a 1-out walk and scored on Jackson's triple to the LField corner. Sizemore
then singled-in Jackson.
 †  † New York's other run came on a 1-out solo homer, a 408-foot blast to LCField
by Mark Teixeira (#8) off first Tiger reliever Daniel Schlereth.
 †  † Penny went 6-IP and 98-pitches/59-strikes to scatter 6-H & 2-W with 1-K for
1-R/0-ER. With four Tiger relievers unavailable due to bullpen overwork, Schlereth
tossed 2-IP. Jose Valverde faced the minimum three batters in T-9th with 1-W & 1-K
for the save (#6).
 †  † Sabathia threw a season-high 119-pitches and was tagged for 10-H & 3-W with
6-K to permit 4-R/4-ER in his 7-IP.
†  † Posada, who was caught off base and picked-off in the T-6th, was the only
Yankee with multiple hits (2-for-4).

 †  †  † NYY  †  †  † 2-8-0, 6-LOB  †  †  †  †  †(L) Sabathia, 2-2
 †  †  † DET  †  †  †  †4-11-2, 9-LOB  †  †  † (W) Penny, 2-3; (S) Valverde, #6

QUOTEBOOK...

TIGERS MGR JIM LEYLAND:  † "We needed [the win], thereís no question about
that...It looked really good to see [Jackson] run around the bases. He was flying.
He can electrify a crowd and electrify a team a little bit. We saw a lot of that
last year. We havenít seen enough of it this year. Hopefully, we can get him going
...Iím not going to sit here tonight and say, ĎHey, weíre out of our little slump.'
Thatís foolish. But I am going to say that I do believe in contagious...I think the
guys were really pumped up for Magglio. Maggs had a smile on his face."

TIGERS 2B SCOTT SIZEMORE:  † "Thatís always what youíre looking to doĖcontribute
early on. Thatís a pretty good start for the 1-2-3 in the lineup."

TIGERS DH MAGGLIO ORDONEZ:  † "I was really happy, still happy. Iím going to keep
working hard, trying to help the team. Itís a matter of time, weíre going to hit."

TIGERS SP BRAD PENNY:  † "They had me on the hook. Iím [about] 50 pitches in the
second inning, so Iíve got to come over the plate. I have no choice. Luckily they
were pounding it in the ground tonight...Itís a tough lineup. Youíve got to work."

NYY MGR JOE GIRARDI:  † "Andruwís [out at the plate] was a smart play, but they
made a great throw and Avila made a great play to block the plate."

EXTRA INNINGS:

†  † Jackson has three multi-hit games in his last five, going 7-for-21 (.333-BA) in
that 5-game span.
†  † Ordonez' only other multi-hit game was a 2-for-4 effort at Baltimore APR 6TH.
†  † Half of Teixeira's homeruns have come against Tiger pitching. Teixeira had
one homerun in each of the three games when Detroit opened the season at
Yankee Stadium.
†  † After the game the Tigers optioned CA Omir Santos back to Toledo to make
room for CA-DH Victor Martinez, who will be reactivated from the disabled list
(groin strain) Wednesday. Martinez went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Toledo at
Pawtucket Tuesday night to conclude a 2-game injury rehab sting 3-for-6 at
the plate with 2-RBI.
†  † Wednesday night's third game of the four game series has RHPs Max Scherzer
(4-0) of Detroit and former Tiger Freddy Garcia (1-1) for the Yanks posted as
probable pitchers.
