IN A 3-GOAL OPENING PERIOD<<
@ PITTSBURGH, PA:
Skating in their first game at new
Consol Energy Center, the Pittsburgh
Penguins blitzed veteran Red Wings goaltender Chris Osgood for three goals on 20 first
period shots. The Pens went on to beat the Wings 5-1 before a sellout crowd of 18,087
in Wednesday's exhibition opener for both teams.
Former Michigan Wolverine Mike Comrie scored the first goal in the new building just
1:21 after the initial puck drop.
Sidney Crosby and Ryan Craig also scored in the 1st-Per for Pittsburgh.
New Red Wings defenseman Rusian Salei got Detroit's lone goal at 9:29/2 to briefly
bring the Wings within 3-1.
Brett Sterling and Craig (#2) made it 5-1 before the end of the 2nd-Per and Ozzie's
outing (5-GA on 27-SOG).
Penguins DEF Brooks Orpik was assessed a kneeing major for his hit that forced
Detroit L-Wing Tomas Holmstrom out of the game with 1:17 to play in the 1st-Per.
Detroit's Todd Bertuzzi then jumped Orpik and got an instigator penalty with both
combatants receiving fighting majors and misconducts.
Holmstrom missed 55 games last season with a knee injury and the extent of Wednesday's
hit won't be known until Holmstrom is examined back in Detroit Thursday. Because there
was no telecast of the contest, no replay was available for possible disciplinary review of
Crosby did not finish the contest either. The Pittsburgh Captain sat out the 3rd-Per
due to a minor hip flexor injury.
Red Wings prospect goalie Thomas McCollum stopped all 10 shots he faced in the 3rd-Per.
Penguins starting keeper Marc-Andre Fleury had 20-SV with 1-GA in his 40-mins of action.
R-WINGS H-COACH MIKE BABCOCK: "We think more of [Holmstrom's] thigh [rather than his
knee], but we'll get him checked out. We hope he'd going to be fine."
PENS CEN/CAPT SIDNEY CROSBY: "The atmosphere was great. I think all the guys were really
excited about being in this game and playing the first one here [in the Pens' new home]. It's
pretty easy to tell guys came here tonight ready to compete and do a lot of good things...
I think I just might have tweaked [his hip flexor] a bit. That's nothing new this time of year
for me. It usually takes a couple weeks to get comfortable and feel good."
