The NL Champion Phillies scored a pair of runs off Tiger ace Justin Verlander
in the B-3rd and went on to defeat Detroit 4-0 Thursday afternoon.
The Tigers managed only 3-H off five Phils huilers, all singles, and all of them
off Philadelphia starter Joe Blanton (W, 1-0).
    Verlander (L, 0-1) went 4-IP and was touched for 6-H with 0-W & 2-K.
After Brian Schneider got things going with a B-3rd double, JV allowed RBI-1Bs
to both Chase Utley and Freddy Galvis.
Philadelphia tacked on single tallies off relievers Brad Thomas and Joel
Zumaya in the B-5th & B-6th. Former Tiger Placido Polanco singled and came
home on a 2-out RBI-1B by Ryan Howard in the B-5th vs Thomas. Raul Ibanez
soloed (#1) for a wind-assisted homerun off Zoom in the B-6th to keep the
flamethrower's Grapefruit LGE ERA at an even 9.00.
Polanco went 1-for-3 at the plate and started a pair of double plays in the
first three innings at his new position of 3Base.
Rookies Austin Jackson and Scott Sizemore and non-roster UTIL Jeff Larish
had the trio of Tiger safeties.
The Tigers are 4-5 and the Phillies 4-3 in Grapefruit games.

    DET        0-3-0, 2-LOB       (L) Verlander, 0-1
    PHIL       4-11-0, 6-LOB     (W) Blanton, 1-0

TIGERS SP JUSTIN VERLANDER:   "I had life on my fastball, especially in the last
couple innings. I had that fluidity, but my curveball still needs work. You’ll
probably see more breaking balls in my next outing."

PHILS 3B PLACIDO POLANCO:   "What a great person and great manager Jim
Leyland is to play for. And there is a whole group of nice guys on [the Tigers]
that I miss. Everyone in the organization treated me extremely well...I’m
getting used to [3Base] it with the longer throws and different relays. [HoFamer]
Mike Schmidt is working with me a bit. He’s reminding me about a lot of little things."

Johnny Damon returned to the Tiger lineup at DH, rather than in LField, and
went 0-for-3. Damon had been sidelined since Sunday with a turf toe injury that
still hurts.
The Tigers host a Phillies split squad Friday afternoon in Lakeland. Jeremy
Bonderman, Nate Robertson, Ryan Perry and Jose Valverde are all scheduled to
pitch for Detroit.
The Tigers are in split squad action vs New York on Saturday, hosting the
Yankees and visiting the Mets. 3Bman Brandon Inge is scheduled to make his
exhibition debut In the Detroit home game. Inge has been held out of early games
while recovering from off-season double knee surgery.
