@ ATLANTA, GA:
A record-setting performance
at the free throw line wasn't enough
to snap the Shock losing skid and
Detroit was defeated 96-86 Friday
night at Atlanta.
The Shock lost their fourth in a
row, their first ever against Atlanta
and dropped to 1-5 on the WNBA
Rookie GD Shavonte Zellous made
17-of-19 foul shots and scored 15 of
Detroit's 32-P in the 2nd-Qtr to keep her club close 50-49 at the half. However,
when Atlanta doubled-up Detroit 24-12 in the 3rd-Qtr it set the stage for a
20-P Dream margin in the 4th-Qtr before a cruise to the finish.
Zellous scored a team-high 25-P and broke or tied five different franchise
free throw records in the process. The only Shock charity stripe mark Zellous
didn't earn was the 21-FT attempts by Swin Cash in a 2002 overtime game.
Atlanta out-shot Detroit 56.1% (37-of-66) to 31.1% (23-of-74) from the field
in the easy win, even though the Dream's 17 made free throws were as many as
Zellous had all by herself.
Chamique Holdsclaw was game-high for the Dream with 28-P and Erika Desouza
added 20-P. Sancho Lyttle had 12-P and Iziane Castro Marques 11-P for Atlanta.
Nikki Teasley (7-P) grabbed a game-high 11-RB.
Supporting Zellous' efforts for Detroit were Katie Smith with 20-P, Taj McWilliams
with 13-P and Cheryl Ford with 11-P (her best output since coming off the injured
list). Detroit sparkplug Deanna Nolan had just 4-P on a horrid 2-for-14 shooting night.
SHOCK GD SHAVONTE ZELLOUS: "I was just confident and I know my role on the team.
I was attacking the basket well and I was capable of going to the free throw line and
knocking down the shots. We had open looks but we couldn’t knock them down.”
