IN LIFTING ATLANTA OVER DETROIT<<

@ ATLANTA, GA:

    An in-game series of scoring
droughts doomed Detroit's hopes
of moving closer to Atlanta in the
NBA East playoff seedings and the
Hawks beat the Pistons 87-83
Saturday night.
The decision ended a four game
Piston win streak which had moved
sixth-seeded Detroit within two
games of the slumping fourth-seeded
Hawks.
The Pistons missed eight of their last nine shots before halftime and their last
seven straight to conclude the 3rd-Qtr. Atlanta's Joe Johnson hit his only triple
of the evening to give the Hawks their biggest lead at 77-68 with 7:05
remaining and Detroit never could catch up.
Five Hawks scored in double figures. Josh Smith had 19-P,  Al Horford 18-P
and Mike Bibby 17-P. Flip Murray and Johnson both scored 12-P. Smith and
Horford both pulled down a dozen rebounds to tie for game-high honors.
    Rip Hamilton had a game-high 20-P and Rodney Stuckey 19-P with a co-game-high
6-A for the Pistons. Rasheed Wallace added 14-P with 8-RB. Antonio McDyess (6-P)
matched Atlanta's Smith and Horford with 12-RB.

QUOTEBOOK...

PISTONS H-COACH MICHAEL CURRY:   "Our turnovers were crucial in this game. In
the stretch where it was tied at 78, they ended up making two quick baskets off
our turnovers."

PISTONS GD RODNEY STUCKEY:   " It took us a little too long to get into our offensive
sets tonight. We were throwing up shots at the last second. We played hard, but we
just didn't execute when we needed to."

HAWKS FWD JOSH SMITH:     ""I haven't been going to the boards like I should be in
previous games and I wanted to try to get back to the old Josh.''

OVERTIME:

The Hawks swept Detroit for the first time since 1993-94 . Before going 0-2 against
Atlanta this season, the Pistons had won 12 of the previous 15 season series matchups.
