KAYCEE SHUTS-0UT DETROIT.....Kansas City 1, TIGERS 0, W 9/1/04

KANSAS CITY, MO:

It's tough to give up just one run on six hits and get out-pitched,
but that's what happened to Mike Maroth and the Tigers on Wednesaday
night at Kauffman Stadium as Kansas City edged the Tigers 1-0.
Tiger lefthander Maroth tossed an 8-INN complete game, walked just
one and struck-out eight, but still suffered his third consecutive defeat
to even his season record at 10-&-10.
The only run in the ballgame came in the B-4th when ex-Tiger Joe
Randa singled with one out, went to second on a Matt Stairs single, then
scored on an Abraham Nunez RBI-1B.
Four Royals pitchers combined to whitewash the Tigers with 20-year
old starter Zack Greinke pitching a beauty of a ballgame for the first 7-INN.
Grienke retired the first 15 hitters he faced until hot-bat Craig Monroe led-off
the T-6th with a single. Grienke departed yielding just 3-H & 0-W with 5-K to
get the win (7-&-9). Grienke's only trouble came in his last inning when
he gave up consecutive one-out singles to Ivan Rodriguez & Dmitri
Young, but got Carlos Guillen to ground into an inning-ending double-play.
Jamie Cerda looked like he might give away Grienke's game when he
took over on the hill in the T-8th. A walk and another Monroe single put
runners on first & second with none out. However, Brandon Inge's bunt
attempt went right up in the air to KayCee catcher Alberto Castillo for
the first out, then D.J. Carrasco came on to get the last two outs.
KC closer Jeremy Affeldt arrived last to toss a 1-2-3/T-9th with 2-Ks
for his 9th save.

      DET     0-4-0, 4-LOB
      KC       1-6-0, 4-LOB

EXTRA INNINGS:

Tiger pitcher Jason Johnson suffered a diabetic reaction during batting
practice, was treated by the Tiger training staff, then returned to the field.
The TRigers are now 1-&-6 on their ten game road trip. After a Thursday
off-day the Tigers conclude the journey with three weekend games at Tampa
Bay.
The Royals can't to beat anybody but the Tigers. With the worst
record in the American League at 47-&-85, KC is 9-&-6 vs Detroit.
