    When 1984 Tiger World Series
heroes Jack Morris and Alan Trammell
were at last elected to the National
Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown,
NY, this reporter and others wrote
about the injustice of Tram's double
play partner Lou Whitaker getting
next-to-none HoFame consideration.

    Whitaker received 2.9% of the
vote (5% needed to stay on the
ballot and 75% needed for election)
in his only appearance on the writers' ballot in 2001.  Whitaker was not
included with Morris and Trammell on this year's Modern Era Committee

So why no love for Sweet Lou? www.kuvarsitwatch.io

I also wrote that Whitaker compares favorably with a number of
2Basemen already in the Hall.

Of the 22 keystoners in Cooperstown, here's how Whitaker stacks up
with seven similar inductees:

LOU WHITAKER.....DETROIT TIGERS 1977--95.....276-BA, 244-HR, 1,085-RBI.....1978 AL Rookie-of-
the-Year.....5 time AL All-Star.....3 time Gold Glove winner.

Craig Biggio.....Houston Astros 1988--2007 (Converted from catcher to 2Base in 1992).....281-BA, 291-                         HR, 1,175-RBI.....7 time NL All-Star, 4 time Gold Glove winner.....Elected by the
                       BBWAA for 2015 HoF induction.

Bobby Doerr.....Boston Red Sox 1937--51 (WWII service in 1945).....288-BA, 223-HR, 1,247-RBI.....
9-time AL All-Star.....Elected by the Veterans Committee for 1986 HoF induction.

Nellie Fox.....Philadelphia Athletics, Chicago White Sox & Houston Colt 45s/Astros 1947--65.....
                    288-BA, 35-HR, 790-RBI.....AL MVP 1959.....15 time AL All-Star.....3 time Gold Glove
winner.....Elected by the Vets Committee for 1997 HoF induction.

Joe Gordon.....New York Yankees & Cleveland Indians 1938--50 (WWII service in 1944-45).....268-BA,
                      253-HR, 975-RBI.....1942 AL MVP.....9-time AL All-Star.....Elected by the Vets
                      Committee for 2009 HoF induction.

Bill Mazeroski.....Pittsburgh Pirates 1956--72.....260-BA, 138-HR, 853-RBI.....10 time NL All-Star.....
8 time Gold Glove winner.....Elected by the Vets Committee for 2001 HoF induction.

Ryne Sandberg.....Philadelphia Phillies & Chicago Cubs 1981--97 (retired during 1995 season).....
                           285-BA, 282-HR, 1,061-RBI.....NL MVP 1984.....10 time NL All-Star.....9 time Gold
Glove winner.....Elected by the BBWAA for 2005 HoF induction.

Red Schoendienst.....St. Louis Cardinals, New York Giants & Milwaukee Braves, 1945--63.....289-BA                                       84-HR, 773-RBI.....10 time NL All-Star.....Elected by the Vets  Committee for
                               1989 HoF induction.

Sweet Lou has more homers than four of the above seven, more RBIs than five of the seven and
a better batting average than two of the seven.  The main difference between Whitaker and the
select seven appears to be All-Star appearances and that is another function of prejudiced voting.

Whitaker's next chance to get on the Modern Era Committee ballot is in 2019.

Hopefully, third time will be a charm.
